Katy Perry Delivers A Baby In A Living Room

Katy Perry Delivers A Baby In A Living Room
While most of the world was pondering the state of her relationship with John Mayer, Katy Perry apparently spent Wednesday doing something much more noteworthy ... like, helping deliver a baby in a living room. Yes, according to her Twitter account, KP just got her Doula on, assisting in a home-birth that took place ...

Finally you can add "helps delivers babies in living rooms" to my resume! It's been a miracle of a day...❤️ Auntie Katy aka Stylist Auntie 👶

There's no word on just whose baby "Auntie Katy" helped deliver, though fans are speculating the new mother is actually Perry's older sister,Angela Hudson, who was expecting a child last year.
Regardless, congrats are in order all around, and not just because, like Katy quipped, she can now add another title to her ever-growing resume.
When she's not delivering babies, Perry's gearing up to kick off her Prismatic world tour in May — it hits North America in June — amidst reports that it was her prep for the tour contributed to her split from Mayer ... but, for today, maybe we should just focus on the positive: Someone had a baby! In a living room! The circle of life continues unabated.

White House Film Festival Sets the Stage for Student Stardom

President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, are among viewers who watched the 2009 Super Bowl in 3-D in the White House family theater. There'll be plenty of golden statuettes at Sunday's Academy Awards, but if you're looking for golden opportunities, keep your eye on Friday's first-ever White House Student Film Festival. The festival showcases the Obama administration's "ConnectED" campaign to bring next-generation broadband and wireless technology to 99 percent of the nation's students within five years. President Barack Obama will discuss the progress made so far — and announce commitments from Adobe and Prezi to contribute more than $400 million in software to classrooms. The invited students, parents and teachers will see a sneak preview of the new "Cosmos" TV series, set to premiere March 9. They'll rub elbows with science stars such as "Cosmos" host Neil deGrasse Tyson and Bill Nye the Science Guy. Science-savvy actor Kal Penn, talk-show host Conan O'Brien and the American Film Institute's Bob Gazzale will also have roles to play. But the real stars of the show will be student filmmakers. Last November, the White House set up a competition for short films created by K-12 students to show how technology is used in their schools and how technology's role in education will develop in the future. More than 2,000 videos were submitted, and the 16 finalist videos will be screened as "Official Selections" during Friday's festival.

Kim Kardashian storms out of Vienna ball: report

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian reportedly stormed out of the lavish Vienna Opera Ball in Austria on Thursday night.

The socialite was a guest of Austrian businessman Richard Lugner, 81, who has a history of doling out thousands of dollars to have famous women accompany him to the annual event. Pamela Anderson, Paris Hilton, Sophia Loren, Raquel Welch and Lindsay Lohan have all served as Lugner's dates in the past.

This year, he reportedly paid $500,000 for Kardashian to join him, but apparently the pair did not get on, according to TMZ.com.

The gossip site reports Kardashian felt uncomfortable and left early. Other reports suggest the reality TV star skipped dinner and refused to dance with Lugner, leaving her mother Kris Jenner to take her place.

Mila Kunis Is Reportedly Engaged to Ashton Kutcher, Flashes Diamond Ring

Mila Kunis Is Reportedly Engaged to Ashton Kutcher, Flashes Diamond Ring

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher are engaged to be married. Various sites report that the couple is ready to take their relationship to the next level, as a source tells Us Weekly, "She is crazy about him!" No confirmation is coming from the former "That '70s Show" co-stars' camps yet, but the "Ted" actress has fueled the engagement speculation. She was pictured wearing a huge diamong ring on her engagement finger when shopping with her mom at The Grove in L.A. on Thursday, February 27. Following the engagement rumor, Life & Style claims that Kunis and Kutcher are already fighting over prenuptial agreement to protect his $170-million fortune. The tabloid reports that the "Two and a Half Men" star is "terrified of getting burned again if things go south with Mila." A source tells the magazine, "He ended up letting Demi [Moore] have way more than he thinks she was entitled to. So this time he's making sure the prenup is ironclad." However, Gossip Cop begs to differ, saying that a source close to Kunis insists the story is entirely not true. Kunis and Kutcher began dating in 2012 after he split from his wife of eight years, Demi Moore. So-called pals close to the pair said late last year, "They talk about getting married and having kids. An engagement is imminent."

Pippa Middleton talks about famous bridesmaid dress from William and Kate’s royal wedding: ‘It fitted a little too well

Pippa Middleton talks about famous bridesmaid dress from William and Kate’s royal wedding: ‘It fitted a little too well

You never feel good about yourself after watching “The Bachelor,” but as this season starring single dad Juan Pablo Galavis nears its conclusion, many viewers agree it’s gone from a guilty pleasure to just gross. This season has been one unfortunate incident after another, from Juan Pablo’s anti-gay comments to wide speculation about what exactly happened after a late-night ocean rendezvous that left one contestant distraught. (The woman, incidentally, is one of the final two women on the show.) Juan Pablo Galavis (Craig Sjodin/ABC) Juan Pablo Galavis (Craig Sjodin/ABC) That usually adds up to the kind of reality show disasters that producers love — but this trainwreck isn’t fun for anyone to watch. Though Juan Pablo has received complaints all season about not connecting with any contestants outside of the enthusiastic hot tub make-out sessions, it boiled over on Tuesday night when the second woman in two weeks dropped out of the show on her own volition. During the annual cringeworthy “fantasy suite” episode (where the bachelor has the option to take the final three ladies on overnight dates without cameras), contestant Andi Dorfman was left extremely offended when her overnight date with Juan Pablo was, in her words, “a nightmare.” “The whole night was just a disaster,” she fumed to the cameras the day after the date. “I hope he did not think that went well. I really hope he did not think that was a good date.” What followed was a lengthy, tedious couples fight, as Andi rehashed what made her so furious: He talked about himself the whole time and never asked her any questions about herself; he bragged about his overnight dates with the other women on the show; he has zero filter. She was especially angry that Juan Pablo talked about the other ladies in the competition: “I would love to see any woman [when] a man says that to her and she doesn’t just want to smack him across the face, ,” she ranted. Juan Pablo, meanwhile, took it all in stride — too much in stride, because his lack of reaction only made her more furious. The more times he assured her it was “okay” that she wanted to pack it up and leave, the angrier she seemed. He consoled her, saying he understood her feelings and didn’t want to force anything, but maybe not by using the most comforting terms: “Am I going to die right now? No.” The fight dragged on and on until Andi got in the car and left, leaving Nikki Ferrell and Clare Crawley as the final two women for the upcoming finale. Best of the luck to the winner of this mess. In a way, the incident summed up everything that’s completely wrong with this season of “The Bachelor”: Uncomfortable to the point of being boring, which is the biggest mistake a reality show can make. Although women have chosen to leave the show in the past, it’s generally not at the very last stages of the series, which makes everyone feel like they’ve wasted their time with a sham. And when you’re already watching a show like ”The Bachelor,” that’s really twisting the knife.

Did Katy Perry dump John Mayer?

Did Katy Perry dump John Mayer?

Stop me if you've heard this one before. Katy Perry dumped John Mayer at some point the last few days, according to E! News. So that's why she's been calling me ... Mayer was noticeably absent from Perry's side during her recent trip to London and Milan, from which she returned Los Angeles on Friday. Maybe he was working. You know, men can have careers too. This does come as a surprise as marriage rumors have surrounded the pair over the past few months. Perry was sporting a rather large diamond ring at the Elle Style Awards last week in London. Despite a breakup (or two), the pair have been one of the more visible Hollywood couples since the summer of 2012. They even collaborated on "Who You Love," from Mayer's latest album, Paradise Valley.

The Americans Photos from "Comrade"

The Americans Photos from "Comrade"

Why do you think people find Philip sympathetic even though he's on the "wrong" side? I think you find this sort of characteristic in those men that you do root for, men and women, it’s the sort of every man. He does have romantic ideals, and as well as materialistic ideals, because he came from very harsh, fiscally challenged place. But I think he longs for the sort of a wife to love and to have those things reciprocated. His main priority is his children, their future and their safety. And I think he wants, unashamedly, to sign up for the sort of white picket fence life and have those nice things and live out a nice life. I think those are sort of very real, palpable, and obtainable dreams and aspirations of so many people that we’re sort of raised to think that in a way, and Philip has come from an extremity of that, a very harsh place, very difficult place, and there’s a real opportunity to live out a real dream. It’s in front of him, it’s obtainable; he just has to balance it with an incredibly difficult lifestyle. Now that Elizabeth has come around and loves Philip as much as he loves her, how will jealousy play into their relationship? You’ve hit the nail on the head of quite a punchy theme for the Jennings this season, which is, I think, dramaturgically fantastic, this other element you bring to the relationship as this new relationship evolves and etc. etc. All of sudden these two people that have fulfilled a very specific mandate all these years about sleeping with people for information suddenly their feelings become real, and the green-eyed monster makes a very rude appearance in their lives and it’s incredibly difficult for them to deal with. It continues and they struggle, and in that way that in a minor way that relationships, I think, struggle with partners who flirt or there’s insecurity in a relationship. It’s magnified by a million because of what they have to do. So there’s no resolve; it’s certainly an ongoing problem for them, but it’s certainly a very present theme for them this season. With Philip and Elizabeth attempting a “real marriage” what kind of challenges will that create in their work relationship? The greatest one we touched on earlier is the more sexual element of their marriage with the honey trapping, the sleeping for information, which we saw a lot of the in the first season. That takes a great toll on their marriage, and plays out in some incredibly the word is probably surprising ways. The marriage with Martha, what’s so great is they plant such a beautiful seed of conflict within Elizabeth. Because she’s been this stalwart, this hardline, hard-nosed agent for so long, who’s still incredibly loyal to the cause, she has this great enormous struggle within her where she realizes that she has these feelings for Philip. And what he’s doing when he is honey trapping and gaining information for the cause, for Mother Russia, it makes her feel terrible and she’s caught between that great place of saying I hate the way this makes me feel and I hate that you have to do it, but it’s for the greater cause. So, as a dramatician with a device it’s rather fantastic, but it certainly takes its toll on the relationship. Do you see the possibility of a happy ending for the Jennings? I think they can. I think that was laid down by Philip in the first episode the first season where he presented the defection packages basically saying they could go into witness protection, they could work for the U.S. government, they could be put into hiding, make a lot of money, and live out their days. And I think there’s an element of Philip that still hangs onto that dream, because I think the realization of how sustainable their lives are and how unsafe it’s becoming for the children sort of grows day-by-day. So I think that, in the back of his mind, the happy ever after for Philip is louder than ever.

Kim Kardashian wants a small wedding

Kim Kardashian wants a small wedding

Kim Kardashian insists her upcoming wedding will be "super small" and intimate. The 33-year-old reality TV star is set to marry Kanye West in Paris in May and, despite reports it will be an extravagant affair, she admits friends and family members are being axed from their guest list every day. The 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' beauty said: "We're having a super, super, just small, intimate...as we're going along we're realizing that we just want it to be more small and intimate than people are imagining and thinking." Kim, who has an eight-month-old daughter North, is also rethinking the number of children she wants to have. She told 'On Air with Ryan Seacrest' on Tuesday (02.25.14): "I don't think I can do more than three, tops. That would be my absolute tops, tops, tops. I even contemplate, should North just be an only child? But then I remember all the Christmases, and all of the fun experiences I had and I might just have to tough it out." She added: "I am loving life right now. My daughter is the cutest thing ever. I know every parent says that about their own kid, but...I'm loving being a mom. I never thought I would say that. "I went into this so scared, so scared of every last thing pregnancy meant and motherhood and the responsibility. I always wanted kids, but for some reason when I got pregnant I was so scared. Everyone tells you about having a kid and how it will change your life and it's the greatest experience and you'll love it; it's that times 100."

Amanda Bynes gets probation in DUI plea deal

Amanda Bynes gets probation in DUI plea deal

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Former Nickelodeon star Amanda Bynes is now a former defendant thanks to a plea deal Monday that resolved a drunken driving charge. The actress must serve three years on probation, attend an alcohol education course and pay a fine after entering a no-contest plea to reckless driving, a court spokeswoman said. The DUI charge was dismissed in exchange for the plea. The DUI charge was filed in June 2012 after Bynes' BMW allegedly sideswiped a police cruiser in West Hollywood in April 2012. She picked up two hit-and-run cases in the next several months, along with a charge of driving with a suspended license. All of those charges were eventually dropped. The DUI case was delayed while a doctor reported to the court on Bynes' mental condition. It got back on the calendar in November when a judge found her to be mentally competent to stand trial. A New York criminal case relating to an incident involving a bong allegedly tossed from her Manhattan apartment window was dropped last month. The troubled 27-year-old actress spent four months in residential psychiatric care last year after a bizarre incident in a neighbor's driveway last July. A judge placed her under an involuntary psychiatric hold which was extended at her parents' request. Bynes was released from a Malibu treatment center in December and now lives in the custody of her parents. He parents issued a statement at the time saying that she would continue outpatient treatment several times a week. She was just 10 when she joined the cast of Nickelodeon "All That" in 1996. She was given her on variety show -- "The Amanda Show" -- in 1999.

He added, "I told my daughter, 'Listen, there's only so much love I have to give - you're going to have to split it up with the new kid. There's a finite amount of love and that's that.' So they're dealing with it, but it is very weird at my age. I'm going to be one of those old dads." He made the announcement on Ellen's show, in deadpan, "I'm having a baby... with Ellen," much to the audience's delight. He added, "No, I decided to have the first one with my wife," in a report on eOnline. He then went on a tutorial, saying, "You know, it's disgusting the way babies are made... There's so many human body parts involved. Did you know that eggs are in us? That's gross, just to start with." As for holding babies, Kimmel said, "There are new ways to do things. You hold them by the front of the neck now..." As for the name, Kimmel already has a couple in mind, as reported on Celebuzz. He said, "I think the name Karate. I think Karate Kimmel has a great ring to it. I like to, you know, the Kardashians with the two K's thing. You know, it's nice."

Paula Deen says she's 'back in the saddle'

Paula Deen says she's 'back in the saddle'

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Paula Deen continued maneuvering for a comeback Sunday, turning a beachside cooking demonstration into a public apology for the racist comments that decimated her career last year. The former Food Network star took the stage to prepare chicken and dumplings at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, but before beginning asked the crowd if they minded if she talked about something serious for a moment. Without ever explicitly discussing the allegations or comments she has admitted making, she said she was glad to be back and that, "I am not a quitter." "We have come off of a very hard summer my family and I, my team, my partners," she said to a cheering crowd of several hundred fans. "But you know, I have heard on more than one occasion ... that I've never apologized. So if anybody did not hear me apologize, I would like to apologize to those who did not hear me." Deen's career has been in shambles following a one-two punch of public relations disasters. In 2012, she was criticized for announcing she had both diabetes and a lucrative endorsement deal for a drug to treat the condition she'd until then hidden. Then last summer, during a legal dispute with a former employee who accused her of racial discrimination and sexual harassment, she acknowledged having used racial slurs in the past. Most of her endorsement, book and TV deals fell apart within days. Deen has mostly stayed out of the spotlight since then, even avoiding the Food Network's 20th anniversary party last October. But lately, she has made it clear she wants back. Earlier this month, she announced that private investment firm Najafi Companies is investing $75 million to $100 million to help her make a comeback. As part of the deal, she's launching an umbrella company, Paula Deen Ventures, that will oversee her restaurants, cookbooks and product endorsements. And Sunday's crowd seemed primed for it all, shouting out to her "You don't need to apologize!" and "We want you back, Paula!" "Ya'll's cards and letters that I got, helped me get out of bed every day," she replied. Midway through the demo, Food Network star Robert Irvine joined Deen onstage. Irvine survived his own scandal in in 2008 when the Food Network let him go over discrepancies in claims he'd made over his work experience. He eventually returned to the Network, seemingly unblemished. "This is a warning to you," Irvine told Deen. "You've apologized. You've eaten crow. You're done. Don't do it anymore. I've been there." Before a roaring crowd, Irvine then got down on his hands and knees while Deen straddled his back and rode him across the stage, a reenactment of a gimmick they'd done during a previous festival.

Jennifer Lawrence May Take A Year Off From Hollywood

Jennifer Lawrence May Take A Year Off From Hollywood

It turns out Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t kidding when she said she was going to turn off her cellphone for a year after finishing work on the Hunger Games trilogy. According to producer Harvey Weinstein, J-Law really is taking a year-long hiatus from Hollywood. “She’s going to have a long break for a year where she won’t do anything. It’s been non-stop for her and she deserves a rest,” the Silver Linings Playbook producer told the U.K.’s Sun on Sunday, referring to Lawrence’s recent schedule. On top of her Hunger Games duties—which has recently included promoting 2013′s Catching Fire and filming the upcoming sequels Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2—Lawrence has also been doing the awards ceremony rounds for her Oscar-nominated role in David O. Russell’s American Hustle. What’s more, she also stars in X-Men: Days of Future Past and the Depression-era period film Serena, both out later this year. “Jennifer is too nice and will do people favors and agrees to do a movie like American Hustle when she could have had a rest,” Weinstein explained. “She signed on to do Hunger Games when she was young and wouldn’t have realised how much it would dominate her life. But she’s a professional and always will be.” Though a world without J-Law might disappoint some—she is the quintessential Hollywood darling of the moment, after all—the time away from the spotlight might be good for the actress’s career as well as her sleep schedule. Sure, she’s already an award magnet and a fan favorite, but as Jezebel points out, there has been some backlash against the star as well. Whether the J-Law fatigue is warranted or not, a year-long break could give everyone the chance to remember and really appreciate just how refreshing she really is. Paula Deen’s New N-Word Apology

She’s on her way to a major career comeback following last year’s racist allegations and Paula Deen wants to set the record straight. The southern-fried celebrity chef showed up at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival over the weekend, noting that she’s truly sorry for any pain she caused with her careless words from a few decades ago. Paula explained, “We have come off of a very hard summer my family and I, my team, my partners. But you know, I have heard on more than one occasion … that I’ve never apologized. So if anybody did not hear me apologize, I would like to apologize to those who did not hear me.” After the crowd declared that she had nothing for which to apologize, Deen added, “Ya’ll’s cards and letters that I got helped me get out of bed every day. I am not a quitter.” From there, former colleague Robert Irvine offered some advice- “This is a warning to you. You’ve apologized. You’ve eaten crow. You’re done. Don’t do it anymore.”

Everything Is Still Awesome: The Lego Movie Wins Box Office For Third Straight

Everything Is Still Awesome: The Lego Movie Wins Box Office For Third Straight

Chris and his Lego friends have built quite a hold on the box office. (Adriana M. Barraza/WENN) The Lego Movie remained on top at the box office for the third consecutive week, bringing in more than $200 million worldwide and easily eclipsing its $60 million budget. “We tend to take on projects that seem like a bad idea at the time," co-writer/director Christopher Miller told USA Today. Christopher and his writing/director partner Phil Lord are behind such surprising hits as Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and the big-screen adaptation of the 80s hit TV show 21 Jump Street. “All we do is stuff that would seem to be terrible, and we count on low expectations," Phil said. "And we exceed those expectations. Honestly, we like the challenge." The challenge will continue as Warner Bros. announced a Lego Movie sequel that will premiere on Memorial Day weekend in 2017. Success of The Lego Movie bodes well for emerging movie star Chris Pratt who continues his transition from TV screen (Parks And Recreation) to silver screen this summer in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. And because you can't get it out of your head, here's the film's hit song Everything Is Awesome to enjoy again.

Jennifer Lopez to star in, executive produce NBC police drama ‘Shades of Blue’

Jennifer Lopez to star in, executive produce NBC police drama ‘Shades of Blue’

Perhaps due to Lopez’s star power, the hour-long drama received a “13-episode straight-to-series” order, according to the website. The series is set to begin production in 2015 with an eye towards a fall premiere that same year. NBC describes “Shades of Blue” as “a complex police series that centers on Harlee McCord (Lopez), a single mother and detective recruited to work undercover for the FBI’s anti-corruption task force. Part of a close-knit unit known for its conviction record, Harlee has become compromised by her colleagues — all of whom also pitch in to help her raise her daughter — and finds herself faced with the moral dilemma of working against her cop brothers in order to redeem herself.” reports that the series will be written by Adi Hasak (who wrote the screenplay for the recent Kevin Costner thriller “3 Days to Kill”), and that the series will be executive produced by Hadak along with Lopez and her “American Idol” colleague Ryan Seacrest. “Whether it’s producing, acting, singing or any of her other many entrepreneurial activities, Jennifer is an extraordinary talent and life force, and we’re delighted to be in business with her and Adi Hasak on this sophisticated show,” said NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke in a statement.

'Modern Family' star Sarah Hyland groped at appearance

'Modern Family' star Sarah Hyland groped at appearance

Australian police have arrested a man for allegedly groping "Modern Family" star Sarah Hyland while posing with her at a promotional event in Sydney Thursday. "Sorry to all the fans outside the Qantas event that I didn't get to say hi to, but I had to leave due to an inappropriate touch of a fan," wrote Hyland, 23, who plays Haley Dunphy on the four-time Emmy Award-winning comedy. Hyland has been in Australia with the rest of the cast since Tuesday for the show's location filming of a vacation episode. The actress, attending a "Modern Family" event sponsored by Australia's national airline at the Pier One Sydney Harbour hotel, immediately alerted private security guards, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. New South Wales Police, responding to a 7:50 p.m. report of a woman being "indecently assaulted," arrested a 29-year-old man at the scene, a police spokesman told the paper. The unnamed man was released on bail and is scheduled to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on March 14. Responding to the incident, Hyland's boyfriend Matt Prokop -- with whom she starred in the 2011 Disney Channel telefilm "Geek Charming" and who appeared in a 2012 episode of "Modern Family" -- posted an angry tweet: "To the [expletive] who assaulted Sarah tonight I hope to God you don't see next week. All Sarah wanted to do tonight was say hi to the girls who were waiting outside. One [expletive] can ruin it for everyone. Goodnight."

The Wind Rises: a flight into Hayao Miyazaki's magic and poetry

The Wind Rises: a flight into Hayao Miyazaki's magic and poetry

The Wind Rises, the new film from 72-year-old Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki, takes its title from a line in a Paul Valery poem ("The wind is rising! We must try to live!") and is inspired by the life of aeronautical engineer Jiro Horikoshi who designed Mitsubishi's A6M Zero fighter. It's probably the sweetest animated feature about an armaments designer you'll ever see. The Wind Rises Production year: 2013 Country: Japan Runtime: 126 mins Directors: Hayao Miyazaki More on this film "Poor countries want airplanes," Jiro (Hideaki Anno) is told, as they watch oxen haul the latest prototype out onto the field for testing. Lacking the power of western engines, Jiro and his fellow engineers must instead work with everything at his disposal – flush rivets, split flaps, retractable undercarriages, the lightest aluminium alloy – to reduce the drag on that aircraft and pluck it into the vast, blue yonder. In that face-off between western power and eastern ingenuity you have both a portrait of pre-war Japan, its economy in the tank, desperate to pull itself into the 20th century, and a clue to what gives Miyazaki's film its lyrical lift. In many respects, the animation traditions of America and Japan follow the course of their aeronautics industries. Whether it be Mickey losing control of his magic in The Sorcerer's Apprentice, young Dash learning to temper his speed in The Incredibles ("I'll only be the best by a tiny bit"), to the young sorceress of this year's Disney hit Frozen, relishing the icy thrill of female empowerment, America's animated features are, to a large extent, soft power tutorials – parables of the risk and responsibilities of great power. They put kids in the cockpit and teach them how to take their country for a spin. Mizyaki's hero is instead marked by a more modest, even self-effacing gallantry. Too short-sighted to be a pilot, Jiro peers at the world through thick Harold Lloyd spectacles, watching planes carve great arcs against slowly moving cloudbanks. In his dreams, he talks a walk on their wings alongside his hero, Italian aviator Giovanni Caproni (Mansai Nomura), who tells him "Airplanes are not for war or making money. Airplanes are beautiful dreams waiting to be swallowed by the sky." Miyazaki's fascination with flight goes all the way back to 1984's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, whose heroine negotiates the post-apocalyptic jungle by glider; was most fully explored in 1992's Porco Rosso, about a flying ace who happens to be a pig, chasing air pirates in the Adriatic sea. The Wind Rises certainly doesn't scrimp on its aeronautic minutiae; taking inspiration from a mackerel bone, Jiro's designs for strut fittings spring to life from his table in demonstration of aerodynamic principle. But for Miyazaki, the wonkishness equally edges into another abiding obsessions: the animating power of nature herself. From its shots of blooming parasols, breeze-filled curtains, fluttering snowflakes and rustling bamboo grass, there is barely a frame of The Wind Rises that doesn't serve as a reminder why Miyazaki named his studio after a wind, the Ghibli, capable of reshaping whole desert landscapes at a single stroke. Sounds awfully lot like an animator to me. It even blew Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas into each other's arms in The English Patient, if memory serves. Wind plays cupid here, too, in the aftermath of the 1932 earthquake that flattens Tokyo, here a roiling behemoth that ripples the earth like a rug, although as always with Miyazaki it's the aftermath that interests him most: a series of subterranean groans and burps, as ash and embers fill the air, threatening the stacks of the Tokyo library. Jiro rescues a beautiful young girl, Nahoko (Miori Takimoto), using his slide-rule as a splint for her broken arm, before going to work for Mitsubishi, who send him to Nazi Germany to study the work of that country's all-metal planes. "Who are they planning to bomb with this thing?" he asks. "America, probably". A naif who dreams of birdlike flight while his country readies itself for war, Jiro returns to Tokyo, where he raises laughter from his colleagues with his suggestion that "If we leave the guns out we should be OK." In some ways, he is something of distant cousin to the young Jim Ballard, who in Empire of the Sun gazed on the fuselage rivets of Japanese Zero fighters, "dizzied" by their "magic and poetry": "An immense pathos surrounded the throttle and undercarriage levers, the rivets stamped into the metal fabric by some unknown Japanese woman on the Mitsubishi assembly line." In Spielberg's film adaptation of Ballard's book, Ballard's identification with Japanese pilots became an image of transcendence, a flowering of international friendship amid a shower of sparks, but in the book Jim's gaze is a little beadier, more unnerving, with just a dash of Stockholm syndrome: he is fetishizing the likely instruments of his own death. A similar paradox enfolds Miyazaki's film, which has come under fire from some critics, both in Japan and here in America, where it's nomination for the best animated feature by the Boston Film Critic's circle brought objections from members who objected to its canonization of the man at least partly responsible for the carnage of Pearl Harbor. The looming cataclysm is not absent from Miyazaki's canvas; in Germany, Jiro witnesses Nazi thugs delivering a beating in an alleyway and later crosses paths with a Jewish emigre who warns him of Hitler's plans for world conquest. "Japan will blow itself up," he hears. But it is telling that the most vividly realized scenes of devastation are nature's doing, not man's. The only blood spilled is that coughed into a handkerchief by Nahoko, whom Jiro later marries, their love shaped by their dwindling time together: she suffers from tuberculosis. This is Miyazaki's major departure from Horikoshi's life story, partially inspired by Thomas Mann's novel The Magic Mountain, and there is a certain poetic symmetry to Nahoko's suffering from a respiratory disease – more airways, only this time internal and blocked. I wonder if Miyazaki's poetically occluded view of the bloodshed to come is as myopic as some of his critics maintain: the latter half of the film comes suffused with melancholy and loss, it lovely processions of images is all the more poignant for Miyazaki's recent announcement that this will be his last film. "I'm retiring" Caponi tells Jiro in a dream. "This is my last design." The loss is ours.

CeeLo Green says he's done with 'The Voice'

CeeLo Green says he's done with 'The Voice'
CeeLo Green revealed on Wednesday’s edition of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” that he won’t be returning to “The Voice” — ever. “I’m not coming back at all,” he told a surprised DeGeneres. The singer has been a coach on four of the five seasons of the NBC singing competition, although he isn’t scheduled to appear on Season 6, which starts Monday. After having the same four coaches in its first three seasons — Green, Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton — the music series has gone into a partial rotation. Shakira and Usher are joining Levine and Shelton for Season 6 as replacements for Green and Aguilera. “I’m going to continue my relationship with NBC,” Green told DeGeneres. “I have a television show development deal with them as well and hopefully some other talk show opportunities. I don’t want to wear out my welcome (at ‘The Voice’).” Green is facing a felony drug charge that could carry up to four years of prison time if he’s convicted. Los Angeles prosecutors accuse him of furnishing the drug ecstasy, or MDMA, during a 2012 dinner with a woman. He has pleaded not guilty and denied the allegation. Hoffman's will goes public Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman’s will bequeaths all of his personal property to the mother of his three children. The late Oscar winner’s last testament was filed in Manhattan Surrogate Court and made public Wednesday. It names costume designer Marianne (Mimi) O’Donnell as the sole beneficiary and identifies her as his “friend and companion.” ■ Photos: Philip Seymour Hoffman through the years The Oscar-winning actor died Feb. 2 at his New York City home of an apparent heroin overdose. His 2004 will was written at a time when he and O’Donnell had only one child, Cooper, now 10. In the will, Hoffman requested that Cooper be raised in New York City so he would have exposure to its culture, arts and architecture. Should New York not work out, Hoffman wanted his son raised in Chicago or San Francisco. 3 Doors Down bassist lands in more trouble Todd Harrell, a founding member and bassist for 3 Doors Down, was arrested Tuesday night on a DUI charge in Mississippi, according to police. Harrell was found “slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle” by officers responding to a citizen’s call about an impaired driver, D’Iberville. Miss., police chief Wayne Payne told the Associated Press. Harrell was charged with a second-offense DUI involving a substance other than alcohol, Payne said, and police got a court order to take a blood sample. They are awaiting lab results to identify the substance. The DUI arrest is Harrell’s second in D’Iberville since July 2012. The musician also is facing trouble in Nashville, Tenn., related to an accident resulting in the death of another driver. Police say he was under the influence while he was speeding down the interstate and clipped the back of a pickup. The driver of the truck, 47-year-old Paul Shoulders Jr., was killed. Banksy work brings $575,000 at auction One of three works by the elusive British street artist Banksy has sold at a Miami auction for $575,000. An anonymous buyer purchased “Kissing Coppers,” spray-painted in 2005 on the Prince Albert Pub in Brighton, England, at the Fine Art Auctions Miami on Tuesday night. The piece was expected to sell for anywhere from $500,000 to $700,000. The two other works, “Bandaged Heart” and “Crazy Horse Car Door,” went unsold because they didn’t receive their minimum bids, said Ashley Jimenez, a spokeswoman for Fine Art Auctions Miami. Briefly ■ That edgy banter about sex toys on Monday’s edition of “The View” has apparently caused cohost and creator Barbara Walters a great deal of despair. While engaging in a conversation about getting older with Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy, Walters seemed to acknowledge that she owned a vibrator and that she called it “a selfie.” On Wednesday’s show, with her head in her hands, Walters exclaimed: “We were joking. Joking! I don’t have a vibrator. I don’t even put my cell phone on vibrate.” ■ Film director, animation artist and Clawson native Dan Scanlon will serve as artist-in-residence at the 52nd annual Michigan Youth Arts Festival, which takes place May 8-10 in Kalamazoo. Scanlon, who directed Disney-Pixar’s “Monsters University,” also worked as a storyboard artist for “Cars” and “Toy Story 3” and worked on the senior creative team for “Brave.” Students statewide compete for spots at the Youth Arts Festival. The top 1,000 are chosen to attend master classes led by industry professionals at Western Michigan University. They also get opportunities to showcase their work.
