Chelsea Handler at the Top of Her Game

Chelsea Handler at the Top of Her Game

Chelsea Lately, Chelsea Handler’s late night talk show on E! will have its final episode at the end of this current season after an eight year run. According to her new manager, Irving Azoff, the comedienne will not be renewing her contract when it expires in nine months. Although the decision may seem abrupt to some who viewed her as being at the top of her game, Handler had been unhappy with E! network for some time and was not exactly shy about it. While appearing on The Howard Stern Show earlier this month, she pointedly attacked her home network, expressing ill-faith and lack of devotion to their vision: ”They don’t know what they’re doing. They have no ideas. It’s a failure,” Handler told the host, calling the network “a sad, sad place to live.” Handler would easily criticize the network and her show while on air over the years, and it was never completely evident if Handler was fooling around or if she was really unhappy and was trying to send a message. E! has not responded to the vocal slap, and according to a spokesperson for the network it is not planning on commenting on what will happen to Chelsea Lately at the moment. A source did comment, however, that because of the way Handler treated E!, a new enterprise may be difficult for her to land, fearing she may treat them in the same manner. Handler, 39, has potentially pegged herself as an undesirable candidate for future networks due to the way she vocally and publicly defamed E!, but she contends she really is at the top of her game and does not seem to be affected by the judgments surrounding her opinion of her parent network. This month the comedienne’s new book, Uganda Be Kidding Me, has remained on the New York Times bestseller list at No. 1 for over a week, which is a personal best for the author. She has been promoting the book on a stand-up comedy book tour with over 30 destinations, including over sea dates. Also, now with her new manager, Azoff, she is determined to “figure out her life after E!.” There are a few opportunities in the works for the talk show host, and it is rumored there could possibly be a radio show or even a gig with Netflix or some other digital service for either a nightly or a weekly show. ”We have at least seven suitors and many ideas,” Azoff joked. CAA (Creative Artists Agency) representatives have been in communication with other companies and networks, such as Sony Television, Lionsgate, and FX, where Handler and her talents may be a good fit once Chelsea Lately has run its course, but there is no word yet whether these institutions are interested in representing Handler. It is suspected she may be too much of a hot item, earning about $9 million every year while entertaining an audience averaging 572,000 a night. Handler has been so good at being at the top of her game, that it may take a while to find an entertainment establishment that will pay her as much as E! did.

School Sends Home Girl Who Shaved Head in Support of Classmate with Cancer

School Sends Home Girl Who Shaved Head in Support of Classmate with Cancer

A Colorado grade school is facing criticism this week, after administrators there sent a 9-year-old girl home Monday for shaving her head in solidarity with a classmate diagnosed with cancer. Kamryn Renfro, a 9-year-old student at Grand Junction’s Caprock Academy, was told the haircut violated the school’s dress code, which prohibits shaved heads for female students. Her friend, Delaney Clements, is an 11-year-old with stage 4 cancer.Kamryn decided to have a big makeover -- shaving off all of her hair in solidarity with a friend [Delaney] who was starting chemotherapy to treat cancer. I was really excited I would have somebody to support me and I wouldn't be alone with people always laughing at me. I would at least have somebody to go through it all," says Delaney, who just began chemotherapy. ... Kamryn's mother emailed the school explaining why she got the extreme haircut, but administrators at first said they couldn't make exceptions."Notably, the school’s rules also ban lunch boxes with cartoon characters and requires pupils as young as kindergarteners to wear ‘dress-type shoes.’ More than half of the code is addressed only to female students. Officials told KDVR Kamryn was invited back to school on Tuesday, and that an emergency meeting was called to vote on whether to repeal the rule.

Too much worry lowers chances of pregnancy: Study

Too much worry lowers chances of pregnancy: Study

NEW DELHI: Too much stress and worry may lower the chances of getting pregnant and cause infertility, a new study by researchers of the Ohio University has found. They found that stressed women are nearly 30 percent less likely to get pregnant and twice more likely to be diagnosed as 'infertile'. Stress was indicated by measuring a marker that is found in saliva. Extending and corroborating their earlier study conducted in the UK that demonstrated an association between high levels of stress and a reduced probability of pregnancy, this work adds new insight by suggesting that stress is associated with an increased risk of infertility. The study findings appear online in the journal Human Reproduction. Courtney Denning-Johnson Lynch, director of reproductive epidemiology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, and colleagues found that women with high levels of alpha-amylase — a biological indicator of stress measured in saliva — are 29 percent less likely to get pregnant each month and are more than twice as likely to meet the clinical definition of infertility (remaining not pregnant despite 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse), compared to women with low levels of this protein enzyme. Researchers tracked 501 American women ages 18 to 40 years who were free from known fertility problems and had just started trying to conceive, and followed them for 12 months or until they became pregnant as part of the Longitudinal Investigation of Fertility and the Environment (LIFE) Study. Saliva samples were collected from participants the morning following enrollment and again the morning following the first day of their first study-observed menstrual cycle. Specimens were available for 373 women and were measured for the presence of salivary alpha-amylase and cortisol, two biomarkers of stress. ""This is now the second study in which we have demonstrated that women with high levels of the stress biomarker salivary alpha-amylase have a lower probability of becoming pregnant, compared to women with low levels of this biomarker. For the first time, we've shown that this effect is potentially clinically meaningful, as it's associated with a greater than two-fold increased risk of infertility among these women,"" said Lynch, the principal investigator of the LIFE Study's psychological stress protocol. Lynch said results of this research should encourage women who are experiencing difficulty getting pregnant to consider managing their stress using stress reduction techniques such as yoga, meditation and mindfulness. However, she said that couples should not blame themselves if they are experiencing fertility problems, as stress is not the only or most important factor involved in a woman's ability to get pregnant. Germaine Buck Louis, director of the Division of Intramural Population Health Research of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the LIFE Study's principal investigator, said, "Eliminating stressors before trying to become pregnant might shorten the time couples need to become pregnant in comparison to ignoring stress. The good news is that women most likely will know which stress reduction strategy works best for them, since a one-size-fits-all solution is not likely."

High Levels Of Stress May Diminish A Woman's Fertility

High Levels Of Stress May Diminish A Woman's Fertility

3/24/2014 11:45 AM ET High levels of stress may reduce a woman's chances of getting pregnant, according to research conducted at Ohio State University. The study, published in the journal Human Reproduction, followed 401 healthy couples trying to conceive from 2005-2009. The results showed that those couples who had the most difficulty in conception were those reporting the highest levels of stress. "Women with higher levels of the stress biomarker had a two-fold increased risk of infertility," said study author Courtney Lynch. "Alpha-amylase is an enzyme that is secreted into the mouth that helps the body start to digest carbohydrates," she added. "It is also linked to the fight-or-flight part of the stress system." The team found that women with the highest levels of salivary alpha-amylase had a 29% reduction in their ability to conceive.

Shirtless Kanye West cradles cherubic baby North as inside shots of Kim Kardashian's Vogue shoot are revealed

It caused a huge amount of controversy when it was unveiled last week. Now, inside shots of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's Vogue cover shoot have been revealed. But while the idea of a reality star gracing the cover of Vogue might have offended readers of the fashion bible, few could argue that the inside spread is nothing short of adorable.
In one touching photograph - shot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz - a shirtless Kanye is seen cradling a naked baby North West, as Kim places her hand over her daughter.
In another shot - the pair are seen close-up about to kiss one another.
The loving and intimate family portraits will hopefully quash some of the controversy that has been building up over the cover in the last few days.Today, Shahs Of Sunset star Reza Farahan claimed to TMZ that the cover was 'bought' for her by Kanye.
Clearly based on his own opinion, Reza told the site that Vogue is a 'legit fashion magazine' while Kim 'has a line of clothing at Sears'.
But it seems that the reality star has brushed off negative comments about her cover and spread in the prestigious US magazine, and is grateful to Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour for making her dream a reality.A source revealed to E! News: 'She's thrilled about it - completely over the moon. For her, this is a dream come true.'
'[Kim] doesn't spend time worrying about the haters. She's not stressing about the backlash, she honestly doesn't pay attention to stuff like that.'
The controversial decision to put the 33-year-old beauty and her fiancé Kanye on the cover of Vogue's April edition caused outrage in the fashion world, with celebrities including Sarah Michelle Gellar threatening to cancel her subscription to the elite magazine. The announcement caused shockwaves when the image - which sees Kim looking demure in a Lanvin bridal gown as Kanye nestles up to her - was unveiled on Friday.
Anna was previously said to have declared the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star would only appear in the publication 'over her dead body.'
However, Kim is thrilled with the result and it seems no one was more surprised than her friends, who were kept in the dark about her career landmark.

Idina Menzel forgives John Travolta's 'Adele Dazeem' Oscar gaffe

IDINA Menzel, the singer who made global headlines earlier this month after John Travolta butchered her name at the Oscars (who could forget Adele Dazeem?), has forgiven the actor for his monumental gaffe. "He was really gracious and sent this gorgeous email, and we're buddies and it's all cool," Menzel told Billboard magazine, adding that the 60-year-old actor also sent her flowers. Menzel did admit that Travolta’s flub threw her as she prepared to perform Let It Go from the film Frozen at the ceremony. "It threw me for a minute," Menzel said. "But then I just got back on track and reminded myself of where I was, and what a beautiful moment it was." The Broadway legend said that she has "only benefited" from Travolta’s gaffe. Travolta, who was endlessly sledged online after his slip-up, went on to publicly apologise to Menzel a few days later. "I’ve been beating myself up all day. Then I thought… what would Idina Menzel say? She'd say, 'Let it go, let it go!'" he said in a statement. And it seems she did.

News/ Rihanna Promotes Monster Tour With Teen Mom 2 Clip of Jenelle Evans
Rihannais pulling out all the stops to promote her "Monster Tour"…including putting her own spin on a particular Teen Mom 2 clip. The "Stay" crooner posted the revised video on Instagram Saturday, which originally showed Jenelle Evans telling her lawyer she can't fulfill her jail sentence because she has tickets to a Kesha concert. "I really can't miss that concert," she says in the 2012 video. "That's why I got all these feathers in my hair. I bought clothes for the concert. I set up hotel rooms for the concert." Rihanna's version of the clip is mostly the same, except right after Evans says, "It's not just a concert," the clip quickly cuts to a shot of the singer's tour signage with a voice announcing "It's Rihanna!"

Season finale review: 'Girls' - 'Two Plane Rides': Opening night

A review of the "Girls" season 3 finale coming up just as soon as I can feel the labia forming... "Well, I'm sick of trying to work it out. Can't one thing ever be easy with you?" -Adam There are times when each season of "Girls" can feel haphazard and patchwork, with characters appearing and disappearing at random and story arcs being interrupted for short story-ish digressions that take Hannah out of town and/or give most of the cast the week off. That's not necessarily a bad thing, both because those digressions (like "Flo" this season) often represent the series at its best, and because it does a nice job of conveying how directionless and random Hannah Horvath's life can become. And I'm always impressed with the way the show tends to conclude its seasons in a way that bring everything full circle for Hannah (and, at times, for her friends). Season 1, for instance opens with Hannah stuffing her face with pasta, and ends with her doing the same with a piece of wedding cake, and her interactions with Adam in that episode neatly pay off everything the two of them went through over those 10 episodes. Early in season 2, Adam breaks into Hannah's apartment and she's so scared that she calls the cops on him; at the end of that season, he kicks her door in and it's a heroic, romantic gesture. Season 3, meanwhile, opened with the very simple image of Hannah and Adam's bodies entwined as they sleep peacefully together, followed by Adam dutifully bringing Hannah her OCD medication. They are together, they are happy, and yet she is entirely reliant on him to function. Over the course of this year, the two of them went through personal and professional ups and downs, from the stress of having Caroline living with them to Hannah's editor's death and Adam's discomfort at her lack of empathy to Hannah's envy of Adam getting this big break while she was being paid well in a job she hated. And we conclude — in a way that somewhat echoes Adam's "What the fuck is wrong with you?" query from the season 1 finale — with the two of them on the rocks, but also with Hannah alone, studying the letter from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and smiling at the thought of finally having professional direction in her life again, and a chance to feel special and creative and adventurous in the way that she's always wanted to. It's not a happy ending for the season, necessarily, because things are so precarious with Adam, but it feels true to everything we saw Hannah go through this year. And by making the closing moment not involve her relationship, or her alienation of her friends, but the possibility of a new direction for Hannah, it feels exciting and suggests some real growth for the series — even as I'm well aware that the realities of having the other characters living in New York means Hannah isn't likely to spend two years trying to be "bicoastal." So that was all very effective, and the moment where Hannah told Adam about Iowa right before opening night hit that "Girls" sweet spot of being uncomfortable while feeling like exactly the thing Hannah would do there. We know Adam well enough to know how he will respond to this news at this moment, and Hannah knows him even better, but she needs to share this news and the ways in which it makes her seem special again, and in her mind what better time is there than when Adam is poised to also feel extra special? Beyond Adam and Hannah's story, "Two Plane Rides" did a nice job of tying back in several of this season's other loose threads. Jessa's arc on the whole was underfed (and without last year's maternity leave excuse), but even though Shoshana appeared even less often this year, Zosia Mamet was so good in the finale — in particular in the intermission scene with Ray, where she was allowed to be dramatic in a way she's virtually never gotten to do in this role — that she sold the notion of Shoshana having had a lost year, overreacting too much to the breakup with Ray and the sexual freedom she suddenly felt, and realizing too late how badly she had screwed up. There were several times earlier in the season where she was being smug about how unsuccessful her group of older friends had been, but now she's wound up in the discount bin with the rest of them. And Ray has now improbably been placed in position to turn down two of the four Girls (though perhaps Shoshana can bulldoze him the way Marnie did last week). Even Caroline came back, and we got an explanation for where she's been: shacked up with Laird, first at his brother's compound upstate, now in his ground floor apartment where she is carrying his spawn. As a human being, I am horrified at the notion of Caroline reproducing and raising a child (I'm more scared for that kid than any fictional one since Bobby Bacala and Janice Soprano reproduced); as a viewer of "Girls," I am delighted for the comic possibilities of it. Overall, there were times where the whole of "Girls" season 3 was, like season 2, threatening to be a little less than the sum of its individual parts. And while I still think they can do better at servicing the supporting characters — or else need to pull a "True Detective" and treat them all as secondary figures there simply to tell us more about Hannah and possibly Adam — this finale, like the last one, pulled enough of the season together to make the whole journey feel satisfying. This remains a weird, at times maddening show that on occasion I feel the need to watch while I'm inside a sensory deprivation tank and the TV is outside it, and yet the writing and direction remain so sharp, and Hannah remains such a well-drawn character — even with her knack for being spectacularly irritating at times — that I'm in it for the long haul, even if that haul takes us to Iowa for a while. Some other thoughts: * Again, I don't know that the show really knew what it was doing with Jessa this year — or, at least, that it had the time to tell that story properly, even given two more episodes than normal. Beadie asking Jessa to help her commit suicide — then begging her to call 911 when she realizes she was mistaken — felt awfully rushed, and would have worked better if Beadie had been around for at least half a season. Hopefully, this isn't the last we'll see of Louise Lasser on the show. * Am I wrong, or did it seem that by the end of the phone call, Mr. and Mrs. Horvath appeared willing to pay for Iowa? If so, interesting but not that surprising that they would pay for something that suggests Hannah has a direction in her life again, even as they wouldn't subsidize her aimless lifestyle from the start of the series. * Shoshana, confused by the British accents: "But it's called 'Major Barbara.'" Did she think it was a Barbra Streisand biography? Or just that the name doesn't exist in England? * If the show had only brought Andrew Rannells back for the gag where Elijah (who earlier was scolding Ray for not being dressed up enough) is revealed to be wearing formal shorts... dayenu. * More wardrobe humor: Marnie and Clementine are both wearing green dresses to opening night, though Clementine could already tell what Marnie is up to with Desi — and unfortunately for her, her attempt to warn Desi appears to have backfired on her. * Hannah is consulting a picture of Olivia Wilde when she applies her makeup for opening night, and sure enough she winds up with the kind of cat eye look Wilde's been known to sport on the red carpet. * The concluding song is Michael Penn's "Can't Keep a Good Girl Down." That's almost it for this season of "Girls" for me. With any luck, I'll have one more piece on the show going up sometime tomorrow morning, and then when that's done, I will think long and hard about how many new commenting rules I need to add just related to this one show.

Ryan Gosling May Play Busby Berkeley in a Biopic

http://images.fashiontimes.com/data/images/full/8280/ryan-gosling.jpg?w=600

Warner Bros. has optioned Jeffrey Spivak's book "Buzz: The Life and Art of Busby Berkeley" for a biographical film adaptation, and Ryan Gosling is being considered to play the role. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Ryan Gosling is being considered to portray Busby Bekerley, the highly influential Hollywood movie director and musical choreographer. The 33-year-old Canadian actor is reported producing the biopic, along with Marc Platt. "The Ides of March" star and the British writer know for his work with the BBC science fiction television series "Doctor Who" have previously worked together on the crime film "Drive" released in 2011. The studio plans to build up the project as a star vehicle for Gosling to further boost his acting career. However, according to the report by The Hollywood Reporter Gosling may also direct the movie. The project is still on its preliminary stage, and the studio has not named any writer yet for the biopic. Berkeley has become very popular during Hollywood's golden age for his highly structured musical production numbers featuring intricate geometric patterns. For most of his works, Berkeley hired large number of dancers and used ostentatious props to produce fantasy-like and multi-faceted performances on-screen. Berkeley has garnered three Oscar nominations for best dance direction for his works on "Gold Diggers of 1935," "Gold Diggers of 1937," and "Varsity Show" in 1937. However, that same category no longer exists today. Platt is not a stranger in the world of musicals. He was just the producer of the Broadway's blockbuster hit "Wicked" and is currently in the process of developing Disney's adaptation of the Broadway musical "Into the Woods" which is set to hit the cinemas in December. He also produced "Legally Blonde" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World." If the biographical film pushed through and Gosling will be directing, this would be his second time to be a director. His directorial debut "How to Catch a Monster" is due to hit the big screen on Oct. 2 in Denmark. It was announced that Chantal Nong will manage the biopic project for Warner Bros.

Report: ‘Game of Thrones’ Epic Fan Experience delivers

Report: ‘Game of Thrones’ Epic Fan Experience delivers

xcitement for Game of Thrones season 4 was rewarded and inspired at last night’s Epic Fan Event at the Barclays center in Brooklyn. Several thousand lucky fans were treated to an exhilarating early look at the premiere of Game of Thrones season 4 on Thursday night. Dubbed the “Epic Fan Experience” by HBO, the event included appearances by the cast, a phenomenal giveaway, and an advance screening of Game of Thrones season 4, episode 1. After checking any electronic devices at the door, attendees filed into the Barclays Center and were greeted with several Game of Thrones-themed activities. In addition to checking out a display of costumes and props from the set, fans had the opportunity to take a photo on the Iron Throne, and pick up a free tee-shirt. Many came in costume, or wore clothes inspired by the epic fantasy series.
The Epic Fan Experience program began with a literal drumroll. After the lights dimmed, a youth marching band stomped their way up and gave the crowd an enthusiastic rendition of the now-famous theme song from Game of Thrones.
More music followed, as the rapper Common performed his song “The Ladder” from HBO’s Catch the Throne mixtape. “It’s gonna be workin’ on April 6,” Common announced, and performed a selection of his music to great enthusiasm.
Then it was time for other famous faces to take the stage. Actor Kristian Nairn (“the most talkative man in Westeros,” aka Hodor) stepped up to MC and was greeted with tremendous applause, seeming awed by the crowd’s enthusiasm. Nairn introduced George RR Martin, author of the Song of Ice and Fire series on which Game of Thrones is based; Martin received a standing ovation from the crowd. He and Nairn both expressed their gratitude for “the greatest fans in the world” and their support of Game of Thrones.
Martin then took the mic from Kristian Nairn and called out a few surprise guests. Maisie Williams (Arya) walked onto the stage with her hand slapped to her forehead in shock at the crowd’s response. John Bradley West (Sam) played it cool with a wink, but Sibel Kekilli (Shae) exclaimed “Holy shit!” as she took in the cheering masses in the Barclays Center.
A question-and-answer session followed. Bradley West immediately had the crowd laughing with his tales of Icelandic filming adventures, his desire to play Jaime Lannister, and his appreciation for “Kit Harington’s big brown eyes.” Maisie Williams admitted that she isn’t quite as adept with a sword as is Arya Stark, and Martin responded to the unasked question about The Winds of Winter – “I’m working on it!” he said, to much laughter.
Next up was a surprise raffle for a life-sized replica of the Iron Throne – “The perfect accessory to a New York City apartment!” Martin joked. After the epic prize was awarded to a stunned fan, the cast members and Martin reiterated their thanks to the crowd, and retreated for the screening of Game of Thrones season 4, episode 1, “Two Swords.”

'Divergent' brings 'Hunger Games'-like frenzy to stars, audiences
Atlanta (CNN) -- Shailene Woodley and Theo James weren't expecting a frenzied mass of "Divergent" fans to greet them at a premiere in early March.
Well, they'd better get used to it.
The two stars of the new film, set for release Friday, were the focus of a swarm of at least 200 fans, mostly female, who screeched and cheered for their heroes at a special Atlanta screening. Woodley wore Alexander McQueen; James, an affable Brit, signed autographs. Both answered questions. The fans ate it up.

More Celebrity Names Unveiled on Lindsay Lohan's Conquest List

More Celebrity Names Unveiled on Lindsay Lohan's Conquest List

Today in celebrity gossip: More famous fellas have become forever associated with Lindsay Lohan's nether regions, Drew Barrymore called 911 against AT&T, and Courtney Love shut down Daniel Tosh on Twitter. It was the semi-blurred list heard round the world: Lindsay Lohan's alleged handwritten greatest hits list of all the celebrity genitalia she'd slipped into her pockets over the years. At the time In Touch Weekly first revealed the list, fully half the names were blurred and armchair gossip mavens speculated that this was to protect the identities of the non-famous, or possibly even certain famous people with wives. But we were foolish to believe In Touch might operate with any measure of common decency! Today, In Touch released a second version of the same scan, this time with way more names unveiled. That's right, they'd been simply trying to get multiple days' worth of clicks out of this story, and you know what? They deserve it. I mean, just feast your eyes on THIS: Newly added to Lohan's already-impressive menu of prime rib? Orlando Bloom, Benicio Del Toro, The Wanted's Max George, and none other than Ashton Kutcher! But what, just what does Lindsay Lohan see in all these guys, you may be asking yourself. Don't worry, In Touch somehow found a very knowledgeable inside source to help shed light on this question: "Lindsay loves being linked to good-looking, famous, successful men." A-HA! Now we know. But anyway, yes, fingers crossed the list will become completely uncensored in the coming days. Who do you think those last five blurred names are? Just going off of Lohan's resume from her party days, maybe Just My Luck co-star, Chris Pine? Or maybe she scored a That '70s Show hat trick and snared Topher Grace? But my money's on the resident heterosexual male from the Mean Girls cast, Tim Meadows. Yeah, definitely Tim Meadows. Don't be surprised if those last five blurred names are just Tim Meadows five times. [InTouch] Question: Do you like scary movies? Do you like scary movies starring Drew Barrymore? What about scary real life scenarios starring Drew Barrymore? Okay, what about non-scary real life scenarios starring Drew Barrymore? Then get ready to be thrilled: Last Tuesday, it was a dark and stormy night (it was not stormy) and a home-alone Drew Barrymore heard a knock at the door. She pulled back the beaded curtain (I'm guessing) and saw nothing but a white van parked mysteriously at the foot of her driveway. KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK. She jumped backwards in fright! The booming knuckle-raps kept coming, louder, more insistent. What happened next will shock you: The pregnant Poison Ivy star called 911! Within minutes "cops came and helicopters hovered" and this story unveiled its biggest twist of all: That white van didn't belong to a psycho killer, it belonged to an AT&T repairman! So basically, yeah, an AT&T repairman knocked on Drew Barrymore's door and she called 911 on him. Feel free to tell this story around a campfire or at a church sleepover. [TMZ] Except for engaging the darkest recesses of our imaginations with an existentially terrifying mystery and in doing so uniting an entire world around the common thread of shared horror, only ONE good thing has come from the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370: Courtney Love's armchair theorizing. A few days ago the former Hole frontwoman tweeted an MS Paint-enhanced image showing what she believed was the sunken wreckage of the missing plane and many raised an eyebrow and/or openly scoffed at Love's foolhardy endeavors. One man in particular, the comedian and handsome sociopath Daniel Tosh, even threw a weaksauce joke her way, something about asking for help to find the mythological bridge to Valhalla. But Courtney Love's response was as rude as it was brutal and it honestly couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy. Behold what happens when you cross Miss World:

Juan Pablo and Nicki spotted getting cozy, acting like a 'real couple'

Juan Pablo and Nicki spotted getting cozy, acting like a 'real couple'

Are Juan Pablo Galavis and Nikki Ferrell a stronger couple than we thought? The “Bachelor” couple was spotted looking smitten at the “Tiny Tennis” tournament and party with Wimbledon champ Roger Federer hosted by Moet & Chandon in Miami on Wednesday. “They definitely seemed like a real couple,” a source, who attended the event, told FOX411. The spy said the couple was taking “kissy face” selfies and acting “really loving.” The couple sipped on champagne and seemed really excited to meet Federer. Despite rumors the Venezuelan soccer star appeared on the ABC hit show only for the fame, Juan Pablo was supposedly shying away from the cameras at the event. “This was not a paid appearance,” the source said. “They were not doing interviews at all.” Juan Pablo played in the tournament, which Federer umpired, and Nikki “cheered him on" affectionately. The couple chatted with a party guest, who recently attended the same wedding as them. Our source said the lovebirds talked about how beautiful the wedding was, with Nikki joking, “not a bad way to get married, they definitely did it right.” The couple “kissed and held hands” on their way out of the party. Could this mean Juan Pablo's "Bachelor" love story has a shot at a fairy-tale ending? Only time will tell.

Soon you’ll be able to get a real drink at Starbucks

Starbucks is going to start selling alcohol at thousands of stores. In addition to wine and beer, Starbuck’s after-4p.m evening menu will include bacon-wrapped dates, truffle mac n’ cheese, chocolate fondue and other wine bar-type fare. The rollout will take several years, Chief Operating Officer Troy Alstead told Bloomberg. Starbucks first tested the idea in 2010 at a Seattle store, then tried it in 25 other locations in Chicago, Southern California, and Atlanta starting in 2012. “As we bring the evening program to stores, there’s a meaningful increase in sales during that time of the day,” Alstead said. The expanded menu is better suited to bustling urban areas near other restaurants and theaters, Alstead told Bloomberg. In recent years, Starbucks has been looking to boost its revenue by expanding beyond its standard coffee and croissant offerings – a good idea given the recent hike in wholesale prices of coffee and milk. In the last three years the Seattle-based company bought the juice company Evolution Fresh Inc. for $30 million, La Boulange, a Bay Area bakery, for $100 million, and the Atlanta tea chain Teavana Holdings Inc. for $620 million. Starbucks will even be selling a celebrity-endorsed tea. Oprah Winfrey announced at Starbucks’ annual meeting on Wednesday that she would back the brand. “Oprah Chai Tea” debuts April 29 at both Starbucks and Teavana stores, with proceeds going to education charities including the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. Starbucks’ innovation isn’t limited to their menu. Starting Wednesday customers can tip baristas through the Starbucks iPhone app. They are also testing mobile order-ahead options that would allow customers with smartphones to avoid long lines. Who knows, with more than coffee as a social lubricant, you could also see more of this happening at Starbucks

Need To Know: Will Sofia Coppola Go 'Under The Sea' For Her Next Film?

Need To Know: Will Sofia Coppola Go 'Under The Sea' For Her Next Film?
Sofia Coppola is making waves as rumors of "The Little Mermaid" surface. Brittany Murphy is back in the headlines four years after her death while the music festival season heats up with talks of Lollapalooza headliners.
Sofia Coppola In Talks To Direct 'Little Mermaid'
The "Bling Ring" director is rumored to lead a live-action version of the fairy tale-turned-Disney classic. Caroline Thompson, who wrote "Edward Scissorhands," is currently reworking the script. Can we fantasy cast before it's even official? Elle Fanning as Ariel, Bill Murray as King Triton... Angelica Houston as Ursula? Needless to say, we're psyched.
Brittany Murphy's Final Movie Released
Four years after her untimely death, Murphy's last film is seeing the light of day. "Something Wicked," an indie thriller in which Murphy plays a psychiatrist, will premiere April 4 in Eugene, Oregon before expanding to other theaters around the Northwest and then, hopefully, nation wide.
Rumored Lollapalooza Headliners Include Eminem, Skrillex
The complete lineup won't be announced until next week, but the Chicago Tribune is reporting Eminem, Skrillex, Kings of Leon and Arctic Monkeys as the midwest festival's headliners. It'll be a return to Lolla for all of those artists. Tickets for the August 1-3 event go on sale Tuesday.

Courtney Love is as obsessed with the missing plane as you are

Courtney Love is as obsessed with the missing plane as you are

(CNN) -- For a minute, Courtney Love believed she'd found a clue in the case of the disappearance of Malaysian flight 370. The saga of the missing airplane has captured the public's attention, and Hollywood is clearly not exempt from the intrigue. Love, best known as a musician, actress and wife of the late Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain, tweeted a picture of a body of water with the caption "really? look closer? check it out @DR24 #MH370 and its like a mile away Pulau Perak, where they 'last' tracked it."
The "it" would be the Boeing 777-200 that has been missing, along with all aboard, for more than a week. The picture Love tweeted features drawn lines meant to point to what appears to be discolorations in the water and possible debris.
Another tweet from Love says "I'm no expert but up close this does look like a plane and an oil slick. ... prayers go out to the families #MH370" with a link to Tomnod.com, a crowdsourcing site that has enlisted participants to scour satellite imagery for clues.
Love told New York Magazine's Daily Intelligencer that "Yeah I went to the satellite site and just uploaded tons and tons of pictures. I really doubt aliens took it. It's got to be somewhere. I'm a little obsessive."
The Daily Intelligencer, however, pointed out that Tomnod ruled out the theory before Love even offered it.
"Although it is still an interesting clue, it is looking much more like the other boats operating in the region," they reported Tomnod as saying. "Keep up the good work."

'Dancing With the Stars' kicks off with sass, sizzle
The spray tans! The spangles! The sweat! It was all back and on full display Monday night as “Dancing With the Stars” kicked off Season 18. Jason DeRulo opened the show singing “Talk Dirty,” girlfriend Jordin Sparks cheering him on from the audience. The pro dancers steamed up the floor with some sexy moves as he performed. The crowd loved it. And then, "I'm still Tom Bergeron," said everyone's favorite host, introducing new co-host Erin Andrews(who brought some new sass to the show all night long as she interviewed celebs in the skybox), new musical director Ray Chew, and, of course, the new crew of competitors. "Hi Maks! Remember me?" shouted Erin to pro Maks Chmerkovskiy, her partner from Season 10.
'Dancing With the Stars' kicks off with sass, sizzle

Judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli were also back in their seats, pulling out the paddles.
Here's how the celebs did with their first dances:
Charlie White was amazing, as expected, performing a contemporary, emotional dance with partner Sharna Burgess. It was the last dance of the night. And it was the best dance of the night. Carrie Ann called it "poetry in motion." Len said it was "the perfect dance for you." Bruno loved his "attention to detail." Scores: 9, 9, 9 = 27
Candace Cameron Bure talked up her "faith and family," saying, "That's what's going to help get me through this competition." She told partner Mark Ballas she planned to stay on the "more modest" end of things when it came to costumes. But her contemporary dance showed off her sleek figure, long legs and turquoise panties under her silky dance skirt. Len: "You can dance. Well done." Bruno "felt every minute of it." Carrie Ann: "Where did that come from? You are such an incredible dancer!"Scores: 9, 8, 8 = 25
Meryl Davis impressed her partner Maks so much in rehearsals that he seemed tamed by her sweetness and ability. Their cha cha exploded on the floor and completely wowed the crowd. Carrie Ann couldn't be heard over all the yelling. Len: "You're nice on ice, but you're good on wood." Bruno called her the "queen of

Jason Aldean reportedly dating kissing-scandal cohort Brittany Kerr

Jason Aldean reportedly dating kissing-scandal cohort Brittany Kerr
Country singer Jason Aldean is reportedly dating Brittany Kerr, the woman he cheated on his wife with in 2012. Well, at least they're trying to make a real go of it, right? Aldean, 37, last April filed for divorce from Jessica Ussery, his wife of almost 12 years, and has been dating Kerr since, Us Weekly reported Monday. PHOTOS: Celebrity splits of 2014 Kerr, a former "American Idol" contestant and NBA cheerleader, was photographed backstage in the wings at one of Aldean's concerts on Friday, TMZ reported. She was also spotted at his Jan. 10 Austin concert, the site said. The romance is pretty scandalous, because back in September 2012, the "Night Train" singer was photographed kissing Kerr at a Sunset Strip bar. He was married at the time. "The truth is that I screwed up," Aldean wrote on his Facebook page after the incriminating photos of the smooch went online. "I had too much to drink, let the party get out of hand and acted inappropriately at a bar. I left alone, caught the bus to our next show and that's the end of the story." But it wasn't, was it? Aldean and Ussery, who dated since they were teenagers and have two children together, worked on their marriage after the scandal but ultimately filed for divorce in Tennessee. "This is a really tough time for my entire family," the country singer told Us Weekly in a statement at the time of the filing. "I've learned that everyone always rushes to judgement when they hear news like this. That's really hard because no one knows anything about our relationship but us. I understand that because of my job, I have to go through a lot of this in the public eye, but for my girls' sake I really wish people would give us some level of privacy and at the very least be respectful of them.

MIA Sued by NFL for $16.6 Million

MIA Sued by NFL for $16.6 Million
The NFL announced today that they have settled on a number that they feel is appropriate restitution for what happened during Super Bowl XLVI’s halftime show. In September it was released that after MIA gave the middle finger during the halftime show the NFL was planning to sue her for $1.6 million because they received over 222 complaints to the FCC. Today that number increased as the NFL reissued their amount and MIA is now being sued for $16.6 million. The event at the halftime show came during Madona’s set. Madona was dancing around the stage, the crowd was enjoying the show, there were many background dancers, flashing lights and choreographed dance moves. Then, MIA came out on stage, starting rapping and gave the middle finger to the audience at the end of her song and mouthed profanities to the audience. The whole act was caught on camera and broadcast to every home watching the Super Bowl in America, and around the world. She was given no compensation for the performance (as is customary) and was on stage a grand total of two minutes, but the NFL feels that $16.6 million is an acceptable amount. The number the NFL is asking for is not arbitrary. According to league sources, the original amount of $1.6 million was for violation of her contract, which stated that she was not to disobey the guidelines set out by the NFL and not make the league look bad as a whole. The additional $15 million comes from what the NFL says, equals to the amount advertisers would have paid for two minutes of air time. Almost like MIA is being sued for $16.6 million because the NFL feels it could have made that much money if her entire act was cut out and they instead aired a commercial. But this isn’t the first time a performer at the half time show has done something viewers might find offensive. MIA’s attorneys are bringing these examples to the forefront. Janet Jackson is an example that everyone knows. During the 1993 Super Bowl half time show Michael Jackson was on stage and performed his signature move where he grabs his crotch. Prince was the half time performer in 2007 and many believed he was simulating the act of masturbation on his guitar, something Jimmy Hendrix has done (though not at a half time show). The attorneys for the rapper are also citing that the NFL and NBC are to blame because they have a five second delay during the Super Bowl. That should be enough time for them to see what happens and not show the incident. Instead, they kept the shot and the world saw. The moment MIA gave the finger was very brief too. It was at the end of her song and after she flipped the bird the camera immediately cut to an overhead angle; an angle they could have cut to with the five second delay and mitigated the amount of people who could make out what she was doing. MIA also took to Twitter, expressing her displeasure with the whole situation and explained to her fans why she was being unfairly sued by the NFL for the $16.6 million. Part of her objective is to show that the NFL is using bullying tactics to get what they want. The NFL has a long history of being very conservative and doling out fines to players and personal in a very strict manner. The situation with MIA is no different. The NFL is a large powerful company that will use its size to its advantage. This suit does have a different feel for the NFL, as she is not a player with definitive rules that must be adhered to, so this ongoing saga could only just be starting.

Scarlett Johansson on Woody Allen Abuse Controversy: 'It's All Guesswork'

Scarlett Johansson on Woody Allen Abuse Controversy: 'It's All Guesswork'

Scarlett Johansson has spoken up following accusations that Woody Allen inappropriately touched Dylan Farrow when she was a child. Farrow wrote an open letter earlier this year in which she mentioned Johansson's name alongside others such as Alec Baldwin and Cate Blanchett. In an interview with The Guardian, which was published on Sunday, March 16, Johansson commented on the allegation for the first time. "I think it's irresponsible to take a bunch of actors that will have a Google alert on and to suddenly throw their name into a situation that none of us could possibly knowingly comment on," she said. "That just feels irresponsible to me." When asked about her reaction to "backlash" following the open letter, Johansson answered, "I'm unaware that there's been a backlash." She added, "I think he'll continue to know what he knows about the situation, and I'm sure the other people involved have their own experience with it. It's not like this is somebody that's been prosecuted and found guilty of something, and you can then go, 'I don't support this lifestyle or whatever.' I mean, it's all guesswork." Johansson worked with the director in several movies such as "Match Point", "Scoop" and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona". When asked if the accusation affected her relationship with the director, the 29-year-old star explained, "I don't know anything about it. It would be ridiculous for me to make any kind of assumption one way or the other." Back in February, Farrow detailed the alleged abuse in an open letter. In the end of the letter, she sent a message to Hollywood, "What if it had been your child, Cate Blanchett? Louis C.K.? Alec Baldwin? What if it had been you, Emma Stone? Or you, Scarlett Johansson? You knew me when I was a little girl, Diane Keaton. Have you forgotten me?"

Today Show' Host Savannah Guthrie Weds, Announces Pregnancy

Today Show' Host Savannah Guthrie Weds, Announces Pregnancy
"Today Show" host Savannah Guthrie is the latest in a growing list of celebs tying the knot secretly. Guthrie and political consultant Mike Feldman married over the weekend in her hometown of Tuscon, Arizona. While the wedding wasn't a last-minute secret to the 80+ guests, the couple did have something else up their sleeve, surprising the crowd with a baby announcement. Right back to work Monday morning, Savannah shared footage from the day, including the big reveal, when she told her guests that she's four months pregnant. The wedding wasn't one of the 'shotgun' variety though -- the couple already had their big day planned when she first found out that she's expecting. "It's funny because we set the wedding date — I bought my dress — and then we found out," she said. "So I was doing a little praying that I would fit in it, and it all worked out." Co-stars Matt Lauer, Al Roker, Hoda Kotb and Willie Geist were among the guests, along with rocker Jon Bon Jovi and his wife Dorthea. "I did break a little bit of news," Guthrie said on the show, joking about her job. "We are so excited and overjoyed and feel so blessed." Guthrie, 42, wore a Monique Lhuillier gown for her big day. The couple announced their engagement back in May 2013 after co-host Lauer tweeted an image of the diamond ring on her finger after Feldman popped the question.

Rob Thomas responds to fan anger over 'Veronica Mars' download difficulties

Rob Thomas responds to fan anger over 'Veronica Mars' download difficulties
Responding to fan anger over difficulties downloading the new film via online-distribution platform Flixster (digital copies of the movie were provided free to donors who gave $35 or more to the crowd-funding project), the creator of the long-defunct UPN series encouraged fans to be proactive in sorting out their issues in an open letter on the movie's official Kickstarter page Friday, stating: "I genuinely want today to be perfect for all of you. It's March 14. Today, your movie came out worldwide, and I want you to be able to watch it on whatever platform or device works best for your needs. So, here's the deal: We understand that some of you prefer other platforms or services for watching digital content. If you contact our Customer Support team, they can help. If you paid for a copy of the movie a year ago, we don't want you to have less choice and freedom than people who decide to buy it today. And we definitely don't want you to end up paying twice just to see the movie on your preferred service. Please know that Warner Bros have given Customer Support a lot of freedom to help make things right, so if you're having issues, please let them know: they'll do their best to either help get Flixster working to your satisfaction, or, if you prefer, to provide an alternate solution." Distributor Warner Bros. Pictures also released a statement on the matter over the weekend, offering to reimburse supporters for the purchase price of the film on a different platform if they continued to experience problems: "The vast majority of 'Veronica Mars' backers who attempted to redeem their code had a successful experience. A communication was sent to all backers yesterday from Rob Thomas telling them to get in touch with 'Veronica Mars' technical support if they were experiencing problems. Backers who had technical issues were assisted directly by the 'Veronica Mars' customer support team while those who expressed a preference to have the film on a different format received the communication below offering to reimburse them for the cost of purchasing the film in that format. We are, of course, working diligently to ensure that all the 'Veronica Mars' backers have a great experience." Nonetheless, negative comments continued to roll in on the film's Kickstarter page as of Sunday afternoon. "Veronica Mars" grossed slightly more than $2 million over the weekend in 291 theaters, good for a solid $6,945 per-screen average. The film's Kickstarter campaign wowed industry onlookers last year by raising more than $5.7 million on the crowd-funding platform, nearly three times the original goal. Have you had problems downloading the "Veronica Mars" movie? Let us know in the comments.

'Veronica Mars': Five ways the show made its mark on TV

'Veronica Mars': Five ways the show made its mark on TV
(CNN) -- Ten years before comic book heroes dominated box office real estate, there was a small-screen superhero named Veronica Mars. She didn't have the strength and speed (or technology, for that matter) of the caped fantasies that we now see with regularity at the movies, but she did have capabilities that made her heroic in the eyes of teens and adults who craved a young, female character with intelligence, wit and, most of all, confidence. Created by Rob Thomas, "Veronica Mars" was introduced in 2004, starring Kristen Bell ("Frozen") as Veronica, a high school student living in fictional Neptune, California, who went from popular to outcast after the murder of her very wealthy best friend (played by Amanda Seyfried). Veronica was determined to find out who committed the crime to the point of ostracizing herself, which wasn't hard to do after her father was raked over the coals for pinning the murder on the wrong guy. Fairly typical mystery series stuff, right? Yet the real beauty of the show was never in Veronica's search or the cases she cracked along the way; it was in her total embrace of her outsider status and her refusal to be treated differently because of it. Life could suck, and many unfair things happened to Veronica and her friends, but she always rebounded with spunk and smarts. "Other girls on television, like Buffy (on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer') or 'Alias,' they could literally kick a**," creator Thomas recently said. "I felt like Veronica's superpower could be that she just doesn't give a s*** what people think about her." That attitude has gone a long, long way. While "Veronica Mars" the TV series was a cult hit that wound up canceled after three seasons, those who did watch were so devoted to the character and her multicultural, multiclass beach town that they single-handedly got a film version off the ground via Kickstarter. CNN Money: Will 'Veronica Mars' be a hit? For those who never got into the teen drama, the idea of a fan base strong enough to drum up $2 million in less than 12 hours to resurrect a TV character was nothing short of insane. But that would be underestimating the world Thomas and his crew created. "Veronica was the best friend I would beg not to go to Europe," Bell told Entertainment Weekly in a February issue. The actress, 33, reprises her role in the film version, which sees Veronica returning to Neptune to solve a murder case that involves her ex-boyfriend Logan (Jason Dohring). "I feel so much responsibility to the girls that this show affected," Bell went on. "There is a role model here that I care about. I think when you get that amount of love from a fan base, you would be an a**hole not to give it back." Those who supported reuniting the "Veronica Mars" team on film -- and it does reunite everyone, from main characters to actors who had guest arcs -- are getting that love returned on March 14, when "Veronica Mars" the movie will debut in theaters and as Video On Demand. 'Veronica Mars' love triangle resolved? It's still up in the air whether Veronica will have better luck as a big-screen hero than she did on TV, and can draw in a larger audience this time around. Yet even if "Mars" doesn't find much life at the theaters, Thomas, Bell and company can rest easy knowing they've already left an indelible mark on pop culture. Here are five ways they did: 1. It featured a smart, young, kick-a** heroine. When "Veronica Mars" debuted, it arrived in a TV landscape populated by soapy teen dramas like "The O.C." and "One Tree Hill," and reality series like "America's Next Top Model." "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" had staked her last vamp the year before, and the best place to find women who weren't presented as being one-dimensionally focused on looks or their romantic lives -- or damaged and in need of being rescued -- was in prime time, with shows like "Charmed" (about a trio of sister witches) and "Alias" (about a take-no-prisoners international spy). But "Mars" was the place to go if you wanted a character who felt like a teen girl you would actually meet in high school, albeit one who had way better one-liners and better time management skills. (This was a character with the caseload of a working private investigator who was still dead serious about her homework.) Fearless, focused and funny, she made individualism look so much better than fitting in. 2. It featured a strictly platonic relationship. The TV trope of an opposite sex friendship is so well-worn that we know as soon as we see a pair of male and female buds that there will be something more eventually. But on "Veronica Mars," the plot refreshingly never went there. One of Veronica's closest friends is a guy named Wallace Fennel (Percy Daggs III), a companion whose shoulder she can cry on and whom she would readily help out in a jam, but with whom she's an equal, not a romantic interest. For once, the teens who tuned in were shown that yes, a nonsexual friendship between men and women can work. 3. It had a strong father-daughter relationship. After "Mars" fans kicked in the funds needed to launch a "Veronica Mars" movie, their collective breath was held until stars like Enrico Colantoni were a sure deal. As Keith Mars, Veronica's dad, Colantoni was the older, wiser heart of the series. He wasn't always the best parent but he was a realistic one, and his relationship with Veronica was the foundation of the show. When everything else came crashing down around her, Veronica always had her dad -- the sort of comforting story that you don't see in a lot of teen TV, where the parents are often worse off than their kids. 4. It proved that teen dramas could thoughtfully deal with tough issues. From rape to class tensions, bullying to predatory older men, "Veronica Mars" had an endless supply of plot lines that wouldn't be out of place on an after-school special. What saved the series wasn't its commitment to talking about complex problems but the way in which they were talked about. The script brought real issues into a fictional world, and still made them relatable. The topic of race, for example, wasn't danced around; it could crop up in a natural exchange between characters. The subject of classism was virtually the backbone of the entire series, as much of the plot's tension revolved around the wealthy kids who came from a rich ZIP code and the have-nots they shunned. 5. It showed that nothing ever really dies in Hollywood. By industry logic, this show should have fallen to the wayside and enjoyed a life only on fan sites and in DVD sales of its three seasons. But thanks to the on-demand era we now live in, where Netflix can craft an entire series based on what its users want most, "Veronica Mars" and its fervent fan base have proven that anything can have a second life.

South by Southwest Festival Starts to Feel Corporate

South by Southwest Festival Starts to Feel Corporate
AUSTIN, Tex. — I’ve had it with hashtags. Sponsor-suggested hashtags were all over the place at the 28th annual South by Southwest Music festival here: on walls, on stages, on billboards, on vehicles, on T-shirts, on stickers, on cellphone apps. A newcomer to SXSW might well believe that the whole thing was created to induce social-media marketing. It wasn’t. Somewhere within the big, loud, heavily branded party that thronged the streets of downtown Austin from Tuesday through Saturday — and that included a grim accident when a drunken driver crashed through a barricade, killing two people and injuring many more — there was still the core of what SXSW has done since 1987: provide exposure for striving musicians, many of them independent. Continue reading the main story Related Coverage South by Southwest Those musicians, sleeping on couches and sometimes lugging their own equipment to play three or four brief sets a day, still make SXSW’s own brand connote discovery and integrity — the reason Jimmy Kimmel broadcast his late-night talk show from Austin during the festival, and the reason snack-food and cellphone companies plastered their logos and faux-viral hashtags all over the place. Yet those baby bands (and rappers, solo songwriters, D.J.s and other musical configurations) faced widespread and well-capitalized competition for the attention they were hoping to get at SXSW. Anyone willing to jump through sponsors’ hoops — to install an app, tweet a hashtag or get a branded haircut and post it online — could spend SXSW seeing million-selling acts like Jay Z and Kanye West, who performed together, and ignore the up-and-comers completely. It was, in a way, the income-inequality debate carried into the realm of attention: The tiny fraction of a percentage of performers who have made it big were grabbing even more exposure away from the struggling majority. For hip-hop fans, SXSW 2014 was a corporate-financed cornucopia; in the course of the festival, mostly in sponsored settings, there were also performances by Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, 2 Chainz, B.o.B., ASAP Rocky and many other top rappers, often on big outdoor stages with their music booming for blocks. As SXSW becomes more of a corporate platform, hip-hop is well-positioned to exploit it. Most hip-hop acts and posses are, proudly and ostentatiously, their own brands, touting their own success and coining their own slogans. But Lady Gaga was the most prominent face of this year’s festival; she was a keynote speaker, in a softball onstage interview with John Norris of Fuse Music News. Her concert at Stubb’s BBQ was not open to those attending the official SXSW conference; to attend the show, which was also (like many SXSW events) live streamed, fans were required to complete (and tweet) a corporate-approved stunt, and the sponsor had its name in lights onstage behind her as she performed, although she announced that she wouldn’t play by the rules. Perhaps she was acting out some level of self-loathing as she made her entrance trussed to a barbecue spit and later, during the angry song “Swine,” had the performance artist Millie Brown vomit green and black paint on her. During the keynote interview, Lady Gaga defended her acceptance of corporate support. “Without sponsorships, without these companies coming together to help us, we won’t have any more artists in Austin,” she said. “We won’t have any festivals, because record labels don’t have any” emphatic word deleted “money.” Which was, of course, nonsense; her “us” is the tiny sliver of established, high-maintenance hit makers. Self-made bands have been coming to SXSW for nearly three decades without labels or sponsors. The best thing Lady Gaga could have done for struggling bands would be not to steal the spotlight from them. So I spent my SXSW away from most of the million sellers, though not all of them. I couldn’t resist seeing Foxboro Hot Tubs, the alter egos of Green Day, who have their own repertory of punk-revved, British-Invasion-tinged songs, and who slammed their way through sets for club-size audiences, clowning and popping confetti guns. Damon Albarn, the singer and songwriter behind million-selling albums by Blur and Gorillaz, previewed under his own name an album due in April, “Everyday Robots,” a set of mostly somber, slow-chugging songs that (like many of those attending SXSW) ponder the ubiquity of technology. There was a science-fiction streak at SXSW, with performances like the one by St. Vincent: the songwriter Annie Clark and her band, playing her intricate, artifice-loving, often funky (in a twisted way) songs full of buzzy guitar effects and live virtuosity. Synthesizers, samplers and computers were the foundations both for groups slinging relentlessly repeated hooks — hoping to be ad jingles someday? — and for those who were more unpredictable. Chet Faker, an Australian singer and producer, made his songs assemble and disassemble on the spot, triggering beats and playing keyboards as he crooned romantic woes. Sohn, from England, set his melancholy voice over tracks that built monumental peaks; Sylvan Esso, a duo from North Carolina, could sound like deliberately primitive 1970s electro in one song and glitchy, abstract techno in another behind Amelia Meath’s teasing voice. Forest Swords, the duo led by the English producer Matthew Barnes, kept its distance from pop; its somber, deliberate instrumentals wandered from the backbeat of dub reggae toward more exotic realms. At SXSW, rock bands seem like less of an endangered species than they are on the pop charts. Some were unabashed throwbacks, like the Strypes, a young band that happily bashed through pugnacious, mid-1960s-style garage-rock songs about unglamorous lives. There were also bands that were steeped in the drone and reverb of psychedelia but kept song structures in mind. Quilt, from Boston, brought four-part vocal harmonies to their lustrous haze; Temples, from England, had crisp British Invasion riffs amid their guitar swirl. The Wytches, from England, added punky aggression amid the fuzztone, while the songs of Boogarins, from Brazil, looked back to their own late-1960s heritage with some of the exuberant convolutions of 1960s tropicália. Cherry Glazerr, from Los Angeles, drew more on punk than psychedelia, in songs that can snarl while staying calm; it’s hard to resist a chorus that goes, “I am irate.” Speedy Ortiz, led by the songwriter and guitarist Sadie Dupuis, cranked up the angular chords of 1980s indie-rock with the distortion of grunge as she navigated both melodies and relationships that could be choppy. Bonzie, a songwriter and bandleader from Chicago, was gentler — often folky at first — but just as steely in songs that charted trust and tension. Phox, from Madison, Wis., put buoyant African and Caribbean grooves behind sometimes moody reflections. There were quieter possibilities, too. Arc Iris — with its leader, Jocie Adams, in a gold-lamé catsuit — had songs that seesawed between the elfin delicacy of Joanna Newsom and some brassy raucousness. Agnes Obel played quiet, haunted waltzes, with a violinist and cellist using loops to multiply themselves into a string section. Bands like those can still make something of the exposure SXSW offers — if not in real time, then in the endless online documentation, the amateur YouTube videos and radio-station recording sessions that now are as much a part of SXSW as the showcases in Austin. With any luck, and no corporate support necessary, listeners can hashtag those.
